The invention of the car alarm was supposed to reduce the theft of vehicles, and their contents. Today those alarms are the background noise of city life. Irritating and ignored, not unlike incessant and never-ending congressional hearings and investigations.
Our Legislative Branch is noisy lair of largely lifeless litigation by two parties made up of lawyers. This is not government of, by and for the people. It is a gaggle of mediocre people who passed the Bar only to set it so low that only they can slide under it.
They bloviate about “forever wars,” yet are obsessed with forever investigations. What good are incessant congressional hearings that give a platform to the liars and cheaters without ever holding them to account?
Republicans chase the ghosts of Democrat corruption and Democrats create monsters that do not exist to beat with a congressional chairman’s gavel. In the former one seeks justice in political terms and in the latter one finds the depredations they decry in the mirror.
Hillary Clinton’s private email server, Russia Collusion, Solyndra, Jim Comey’s “86 47” to 2020 election fraud, who has gone to jail? Which misguided miscreant is wearing prison stripes?
Dr. Samuel Hawgood, chancellor of the University of California San Francisco, was asked by Congresswoman Mary Miller (R-IL) during a recent House hearing if men could have babies, his response, “the vast majority of pregnancies are in women.”
This doctor, participating in the most performative part of politics – committee hearings, responded to the question in a manner that disqualifies him from practicing medicine, teaching medicine, and he should be barred from using the word “medicine”.
Yet, to what end? After the hearing, he went back to his $750K chancellorship. The hearing and the intellectual obscenity of his remarks change nothing, because the committee’s purpose wasn’t to change anything.
Using the national nightmare of COVID-19 as an example of forever investigations, we can see the futility of it all.
July 23, 2026, on X, Senator Rand Paul (T-TN) patted himself on the back for his efforts to expose COVID-19 documents that show the nation was lied to, “These records raise serious questions. That’s exactly why I fought to uncover them.”
We know Fauci lied, we know there was a conspiracy that injured and harmed Americans physically and infringed on their constitutional rights, but what good does any revelation there upon do if no one is punished, if no one suffers the consequences their actions deserve?

Justice demands that those who harm others be punished and yet there is no evidence to suggest congressional investigations have ever produced this effect.
We want the truth, but what good is it if its revelation results in no change, no convictions, nothing but a smug politician brimming with self-satisfaction via performative politics.
The Senate won’t pass the SAVE Act, won’t pass legislation to end our annual torture of time change, won’t make English the national language, won’t reduce the deficit or address immigration reform, but will continue in these acts of utter uselessness.
If a public official has lied under oath, has violated our constitutional rights, has harmed us with dangerous drugs, has enabled mental illness, mutilated children, used federal dollars in violation of federal law, or weaponized government against their political enemies, punish them as they deserve.
Sadly, for a congress so obsessed with hearings and investigations there is little they can do to put bad guys where they belong. Congress can investigate and refer matters for prosecution related to criminal conduct, such as bribery or contempt of Congress. These referrals can lead to imprisonment for those found guilty. However, Congress itself does not have the authority to bring criminal charges; that power lies with the Department of Justice.
There has not been a useful result from a congressional hearing since Alexander Butterfield mentioned President Nixon was taping conversations in the Oval Office.
We want bad actors punished for their crimes, but we believe our elected representatives can accomplish more. We believe they can do the people’s business while safeguarding our democracy through useful investigations and referrals to prosecution.
Forever investigations are meant to score political points, and the citizens of this country aren’t interested in the score if those points beget only political advertising without producing prisoners.
There is so much to be done and too often the opportunities to accomplish real substantive legislative work are squandered in favor of the circus of soundbites.
Forever investigations are the sound of 435 car alarms, and no one is paying attention.
